Rekkas Cottage  Walking in Skopelos

Skopelos church & harbour

Skopelos is a beautiful forested island, the largest of the Northern Sporades group of islands which comprises of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnissos & Skyros.

Skopelos Town is on the N.E. corner of the islands & is rather exposed to the prevailing northern winds. However, in the summer, these breezes keep the town pleasantly cool.

Besides the main town of Skopelos, there are the villages of Glossa, Loutraki, upper & lower Klima & Elios.

The inhabitants of Skopelos have taken great care to look after their town & have retained the traditional architecture of the island. You can wander around the narrow cobbled streets up to the many churches without worrying about vehicles & noise. The courtyards of the houses are neat & well kept & usually have terra-cotta pots containing a riot of flowers.
You will find various shops offering all kinds of souvenirs, antiques & items of Greek art &  handicraft.
On the water front there are many cafes, tavernas & bars where you can relax & enjoy the slow pace of Greek life.

Skopelos is an agricultural island planted with olive, plum, pear, almond & walnut trees. Where the slopes are too steep for cultivation, pine trees grow, giving an overall impression of green fertility not found on many Greek islands. There are many springs & streams &, like it's neighbouring island of Skiathos, it reflects the lushness of the Pelion Peninsula nearby. The many country churches & chapels are worth a visit & there are also beautiful walks all over the island.
