Hidden Valleys has been operating since 1990, specialising in Swiss Valais resorts off the mass market trail with interesting skiing and friendly locals. Pia and Mike have worked together in Greece and Switzerland for many years and welcome guests to their winter home in unspoilt Ovronnaz. Our aim is to provide a flexible and personal holiday with attention to detail both in the chalet and on the mountain.

Over 40 and want to get better?

Mike, your guide, is well over 40 and for years has been irritated by the average tour operator given the impression that skiing is the exclusive domain of the young.

RUBBISH!!

In the last 10 years we have had great pleasure in introducing quite a few "seniors" to off piste skiing and the mystery of spring snow.

We are not a ski clinic with formalised instruction - but you will improve as well as enjoy yourselves.

P.S. We are afraid we do not cater for children.

The Skiing

The skiing in Ovronnaz provides the opportunity to really improve your technique. Ranging from interesting, sightseeing blue through fast red to challenging black, with a vertical fall of over 1100 metres, there are an incredible variety of options both on and off piste.

The Guide

Mike, who has been in the ski business since 1975 working as ski teacher, guide and restaurateur will be on the mountain most mornings to ensure you find those "hidden valleys", and guiding will cover all standards including off piste.

We have had a lot of success in helping skiers move up from "the plateau" onto controlled descent on tight pistes and into the beauty of soft, unskied snow. We also have video facilities to help you improve.

The views

The views from the top lift looking across the Swiss Rhone are of the Verbier back stations wit the Matterhorn beyond and Mont Blanc to the right, whilst Ovronnaz is tucked in beneath the Grand Muveran and Haut de Cry.
Certainly one of the most beautiful areas we have seen.

On the Mountain

There is a friendly self-service restaurant with a choice of hot and cold food and a spacious sun terrace with stunning views across the Rhone Valley.

The prices compare very favourably with French resorts. There is also a drinks and sandwich bar on the "south side", ideal for a mid-morning or late beer.

The Village

The village has a selection of bars, restaurants and tea rooms and also has a very splendid thermal bath complex, built only a few years ago including outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, Turkish and sauna baths, massage and bar/restaurant - and sticky cakes!

Our Chalet

Jeanette is a charming chalet situated in a secluded yet convenient rural position with 6 beds, 2 bathrooms, living/dining room with a log fire. It is 5 minutes from a cosy bar and 15 from the thermal baths. We will drive you to and from the first chair which is 5 minutes drive, although there is a free ski bus included in the ski pass, and the bus stop is less than 5 minutes from the chalet.

Our Food

Pia and Mike will be cooking and offering a high standard of home cooked food.

Breakfast will be continental style with eggs, porridge, cereals and, within reason, anything you fancy or bring.

Dinner will be 4 courses of tasty interesting food (from Delia to Carrier) including local wines and cheeses.

Vegetarians are happily catered for, but do let us know when you make your booking.

Wine

Whilst wine is included with dinner we do not operate a bar service - so bring your duty free!
We offer wine at 7 SF a litre outside mealtimes. Hot drinks and biscuits available in the chalet. As usual we shall be taking Fridays off for shopping and to give you a chance to try one of the local restaurants for supper.

Location

Ovronnaz is located in such a position that many of the big name, big cost resorts are within a reasonable car drive.

Zermatt 2.5 hours, Verbier 1.5 hours, Chamonix 2 hours, Port de Soleil 2 hours, Villar 1.5 hours and Crans Montana 1.5 hours.

Travel

  1. Fly to Geneva and get the train to Martigny. Trains leave Geneva at regular intervals, journey approximately 1.5 hours. We will meet you at Martigny and drive you to the chalet, a half hour journey.

  2. Rail direct from Paris to Martigny with good connections from London.

  3. Self drive. Motorway via Lausanne, past Martigny, turn off at Riddes, direction Leytron and Ovronnaz. 20 minutes from the motorway.

We will happy to put you in touch with agencies to assist you with air travel and insurance should you require it.

Other information

Please bring a bath towel.

The cost for 7 nights includes  accommodation for 7 nights, breakfast, wine with dinner 6 nights. Hot drinks whenever, ski guiding and driving around the station and we hope, lots of fun!!
